Senator Orrin Hatch: Don't Know Much About Science Book
From the Salt Lake Tribune: Hatch says climate change is unproven
Senator Orrin Hatch based his opinions of global warming on a Michael Crichton novel called "State of Fear". He admitted he hasn't read any scientific papers on the topic.
Senator Hatch bemoans the "non-science" involved in the global warming debate.
Sooo, Senator Hatch. Do you mean "non- science" as in not reading any science?
Or do you mean "non- science" as in a 30 year U.S. Senator who learns about global warming by reading A WORK OF FICTION BY MICHAEL CRICHTON?
Come on, man. That doesn't even fly in Jr. High School. You'd fail if you tried to write a paper on Michael Crichton in science class.

Ethan--get your facts right! It was a novel by Michael Crichton, not Tom Clancy. If it was Tom Clancy, it would be less about the fallacy of climate change and more about the fallacies of entrenching yourself in a land war in Asia.
Since it's Crichton, we just have to worry about when Orrin will propose fighting insurgents with cloned dinosaurs or robots.
Whoops again. Okay, I fixed it. Thanks for the heads up.
Brett, don't forget those evil evil genetically altered Gorrillas!
"Utah's Senator from Pennsylvania" is a ding-bat. At least he's got a great second career writing hit songs. Just a little bit too old for American Idol. Too bad.
The thing with Global Warming is....
You can use science to prove it, and you can use science to disprove it too. Just depends on which side of the political fence you stand...
last anon is misinformed. The only science used to disprove globabl warming comes from corporations with vested interests, like Exxon Mobile.
Kinda like all those scientist on the tabacco payroll that assured us smoking was perfectly healthy.
Hatch proves, once again, that he's a nutcake.

But the "science" that is now giving us global warming is the same "science" that gave us dire predictions of a coming ice age in the 70's, It's just the newest hysteria football to make sure they can keep controlling our lives. Have you heard where they are saying that global warming is actually increasing as a result of our air being too clean? So I guess the solution is pollution.
Hatch is not a nutcase. He is just a very old man.

Exactly my point. They are also now claiming that global warming will actually cause a catastrophic ice age event in the future.
Their theories change as often as the weather itself...
Hey "Me".... Unless you commute to work in a ricksha then you can sit down and shut up.
come on anons give me your sources.
I'll start with just one of mine: NASA.
You know, that commy organization that put people on the moon. They might know just a little bit about global physics, chemistry and climate change. Just maybe.
As for the accusations of changes theories: that's just part of science. See unlike politicos scientist don't claim to know everything, and can be persauded to change their views when new information becomes available. Fire of Ice? Either forces humanity to take it up the ass. No informed person is arguing that global warming is not happening, and that the consequences will be disasterous. Like frost, they just argue over how it all will end.
Lastly the rickshaw comment, while undoubtedly witty, misses the point entirely. No one advocates return to pre-industrial society. Just responsible management of the society we have. I ride the bus. Do you drive you 4x4 hemi powered magnum dually around town on booty calls? If so stfu and gbtw.

I agree with that.
I'm not saying there's no warming, because there is. I'm just saying that its difficult to prove that we are responsible for it, and that even if we were, that we could stop it. I tend to lean more towards Bjorn Lomborg's point of view (Bjorn used to be a bigwig for Greenpeace).

And no, I don't drive a hemi. :) I actually drive a Prius (50 miles/gallon hwy).
In honor of Senator Nutcake, I have designed a T-shirt for him.
The T-shirt says: "Senator Hatch is a Nutcake." CLICK HERE TO SEE THE T-SHIRT. This refers back to my blog from Sept. 2005: Bloglet: Hatch is a nutcake!
The T-shirt Blog
I drive a Honda Elite 80cc scooter (about a 15th the cost of a Prius and not on backorder) to work every day (unless there's ice or snow on the road) and get 85 MPG, not bad, but I'd rather go electric and not have to do all the maint. work that the ICE (Internal Comb. engine) requires.
The lack of scientific knowledge among our politicans is a bit dismaying, they need to be informed by those of us how are seriously studying these issues. Please email/call Sen Hatch and help inform him.
Congratulations! on being recognized for your great work. Of course, I always knew you were terrific!

So for all you folks that still think that there is science debating that we've accelerated global warming here is a good gathering of research.

It is easy to ignore facts and take the easy way out. It is also easy to bury the guilt.
For all you guys in Prius' and Scooters I applaud, but the ultimate is no vehicle at all, although I suppose my Chuck Taylors have some petroleum products.
Ethan - keep up the good work!

Since both Ryan and Grist.org are from Seattle, they MUST be the undisputed authorities on global climate change (and coffee).

Seattle is just one of the few places in the US where we care more for our environment than our Escalades....and our coffee.

Ryan -
The only reason why I am not continuing this debate with you is because you "like to shoot with film, and mostly black & white."
Me too.
I tip a mug of Seattle's finest in your direction...
Hey Andromeda Strain was set in Utah, right? I sense a conspiracy.
HOLY SHIT!
