Senator Orrin Hatch: Slumping Through The Motions
I asked Dave Hansen of Senator Orrin Hatch's campaign if the Senator planned on participating in Pete Ashdown's debate idea.
I was told that the Senator would not be participating because his August campaign schedule was already worked out, that he had many campaign events, so he would not be participating.
I asked if I could have a copy of his campaign schedule for August. I was told I could not have a copy because his schedule was not completely worked out yet,
When I pressed, he insisted what he meant to say is there was a lot of flexibility in the Senator's August schedule.
So I asked if there was so much flexibility in the Senator's schedule, perhaps he could find a convenient time for one or two debates.

He just doesn't want to debate, man. Leave him alone. This is just like the time you argued with the Korean guy at the market for two hours about whether Slim Jims are meat or candy.
An Ethan v. Dave Hansen debate would be more fun than Hatch v. Ashdown.
The simple truth is that PermaHatch has nothing to gain from a debate with Pete Ashdown and nothing to lose by refusing to debate. Dave Hansen can dance around this point all he wants, but it comes down to simple vote economics. How many likely Hatch voters will care that he won't debate? And why would Orrin agree to engage in an activity that he doesn't enjoy and that can only harm him politically?
Orrin does as I say you rotten bastards! NO DEBATE! We know how to win!

Excuse me, the rest of the family IS NOT Republican. Quite the opposite.
Ethan is only a Republican outside of Utah.

Who's the anonymous speaking for Ethan's family? I did not know that being a registered Republican meant that you can never have a contrary opinion about a particular candidate. In fact, I have found a lot of healthy debate and difference WITHIN the Republican party. It's in the Democrat Party that if you are not absolutely in lock step on every issue with the powers that be you are history - Joe Lieberman comes to mind!
Isn't Orrin an out of state Republican? How much time does he spend in Utah?
At one time Orrin had a nickname of Foreign-Orrin for all the time he spent outside of Utah.

ok, hey, it was THIS anonymous guy that posed the question. But seriously, Ethan has posted many times that he is a serious Blue-dog Democrat. I just find it odd that he keeps his voter record as a Republican.
I only mentioned his family because everyone else living at his address (and is a Millard) is either registered as a Repub or Unaffiliated. And it is obvious that they vote and vote often.
If he wants to poke at candidates within his own party, more power to him. Both sides should do that more often. But like I said, its just confusing. His registration doesn't correlate with statements about being a blue-dog Dem.
So how about setting the record straight?
Really, shouldn't everyone in Utah register Republican just so that they can vote in that damned closed primary? The Dems is open so no need to register Democrat. Registration has nothing to do with how you vote. You couldn't even register with a party until 1980 (I think).

All it does is restrict the members of a particular party to pick thier own candidates in a fair manner.

Yup, I do. That way the extremists (hopefully) don't run. I figure the democrats primary is open so that they get the candidate that appeals to the majority of all Utahs not just the majority of the minority of democrats.
I feel we often get extreme rebublican candidates in this state because of the closed primary.

The scary thing is Orrin doesn't really have to campaign at all and he'll win. It's like death and taxes with that guy.
But why won't Ethan answer the question about his party affiliation? I get the feeling he is hiding in the shadows on this one.
I think he is a really talented and smart guy, I just want to understand why he registers one way, then tells us all another thing.
If it just so he can vote in the Repub primary, Ok great. Just say so.
Orrin sees a debate as being the worst idea ever. He is deeply entrentched incumbant. Why would he want a debate to expose how lacking he has been in representing his constituents.
